It is certainly a great feeling knowing that you have a website. Your friends have seen it and is happy with it. Your current customers knows of its existence because you have informed them. Time to be honest with ourselves. Is your website doing what it is supposed to do? Do your site actually need some work?

You are probably right of you answered yes. Today’s technology is ever faster changing. That sleek, professional designs that were so popular three years ago are now totally outdated and being replaced by newer ideas such as responsive website design, flat design etc.

The purpose of this blog is to share some signs that may assist us in establishing if our website need some work or perhaps a major overhaul. Let’s look at the following key indicators of a successful website:

1. User experience (UX):

As the name suggest, UX refers to the experience of a visitor when your website opens up in front of him/her. It refers to how the person feels when he/she interacts with your website. How do your visitors feel about your website considering things such as ease of use, perception of the value of the system, utility, efficiency in performing tasks and so forth? If you find that your visitors are not that excited when interacting with your website it may be necessary to consider a design change with user experience in mind.
2. User Interface (UI):

The boundary between user experience and user interface is fairly blurred UI concerns itself with the actual layout of a product. A well planned UI will lead to a website’s pages being designed to visually communicate the path that was laid out by a UX designer. A proper designed UI will ensure a cohesive style and ensure that a consistent design language is applied across the entire website. If your visitor get a different experience on every page he/she visit on your website it may be time to consider a fresh UI design.
3. Slow loading webpages:

There is nothing that chases a visitor away as quickly as a slow loading page. Just imagine a visitor visits your website in order to buy a specific product in a hurry and your webpage takes ages to load. Will the visitor buy from you? We live in an age where everything need to be available at the drop of a hat. Okay nowadays we do not wear hats, but you get the point. Slow loading pages can be caused by many different reasons and variables. Most commonly it can be because of messy code, images not properly optimised for web display, outdated code etc. If your website is slow your visitors will go! It may be time to consider a new website

4. Difficult to navigate:

The second most reason why visitors will leave your website immediately will be the inability to navigate to wherever they need to be on your website. Your website may be containing the latest technology and the most impressive coding, but in the end it is up to the user/visitor to make the call as to whether a website is easily navigated. Nothing irritates visitors more than not being able to get where they need to be.

5. Landing page not communicating your product/service:

A landing page is (as the name suggests) normally the first page on your website where a visitor will land. Whilst it may be tempting to tell the visitor who you are, where you come from etc. your visitor will only be interested in your products/services. Although you will have pages dedicated to your services/products, it is good practice to make your product/service stand out on the landing page with “calls to action” immediately visible. “Calls to action” are merely terms used to refer to a button or link that will immediately guide the visitor into action/decision/purchase of some sorts. Time to reconsider your landing page?

6. Webpages on mobile devices:

This information has been shared so many times that I almost left it out of this list. There are however so many websites today that is still not mobile friendly. The design trend the last couple of years has been to design a website for mobile devices and from thereon for larger screens. Nothing frustrates a mobile visitor more than not being able to view your website properly on a mobile device. There is absolutely no excuse not to have a responsive website design (RWD). Research is showing us that a large number of devices used to access the internet on a daily basis are in fact mobile devices. Although laptops and desktops are still being used mostly this may certainly change. In any event, research shows clearly that it is inexcusable not to have a RWD.

7. Content – infographics:

Infographics are simply visual web content. It is created by combining text and images designed to represent data. In this age of big data, Infographics are the best suited method of passing information in a compelling visual format which is easy to understand. In addition, Infographics is a very powerful online marketing tool. Some of the advantages of having Infographics on your website are:

• They are attractive and eye catching
• Readers can quickly scan them
• It helps creating brand awareness
• A well created Infographic will be shared by visitors increasing traffic to your website
• It will elevate your page ranking (increased SEO)

Is your website falling short? Maybe it is time to consider an Infographic that will explain your products/processes clearly to your target audience.

8. Content – relevant and informative:

Irrelevant and uninformative content will not only drive visitors away, but will lead to lower search engine rankings and ultimately very little visitors. A visitor visits your website for a specific reason and that is whether you offer the product or service that he/she needs? If the content does not speak to the visitor or fails to capture their attention your website will not achieve what it has been created for. Leading search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing places a lot of emphasis on a website’s content and the value it will bring to your visitor.

9. FAQ:

Through running your business you are sure to get a number of questions that are frequently asked by different customers. It will be safe to say that these questions will be asked by visitors to your website as well. A person with unanswered questions will not turn into a customer. Being able to answer your visitors’ questions creates trust which is an essential part to any business transaction. Do you need to consider adding a FAQ to your website?
