In this article we will have a look at how to increase your website SEO ranking by blogging.

During the years we have had several discussions with clients and other people in the online industry. The one topic that always gets a lot of lip is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). Since WebScripto is very involved with WordPress (best blogging platform) website building, we continuously look at ways our clients can improve the SEO of their WordPress website themselves. As the heading suggests, we will have an in depth look at how a WordPress website owner can improve the SEO of his/ her website. The focus of this article will also be to enable website owners who use a different Content Management System with the blogging capabilities required to raise their SEO rankings.

Before we proceed, we need to understand that this article is not containing any ideas or suggestions that will let your website get onto the 1st page of Google search results overnight. The first page of any search engine’s results will always go to the deserving websites. In our experience, deserving websites can be interpreted as those websites which Search Engines regard as “adding value to a visitor”. Search Engines want their search results to be relevant, informative and authoritative. With this knowledge we know which criteria our websites need to meet to receive higher rankings.

As you can already guess, or will probably know already, a well-planned SEO Strategy will entail keywords, content generation and back linking. To achieve this and to get search engines to take note of your website is to have an active blog. Let us have a look at the reasons why we believe that a quality blog is a great way to gain organic traffic to your website.


You are in control when you host a blog and develop your own unique content. The importance of realising that you are in control will ensure that you control the message contained in your blog. You know your product or service inside out. You can share your knowledge in an authoritative manner and build an authoritative online presence. In this manner you can certainly increase your website’s SEO.

Variety of content:

As mentioned above, search engines want to display content that is helpful for their users. Your website can (and should) only display a certain amount of information/content. With a blog, however you can write about anything that you believe will be most helpful to your audience and the audience you want to reach.

“How-to” type of posts is one of the most utilised search phrases. If you can write an article (or articles) on how to do a specific task e.g. “How to increase the SEO of  your WordPress website by blogging”, this article stands a better change of being “discovered” than an SEO Company’s page that does not do any blogging. I know this may not be a good example, but I think you get the gist of the matter.

If you often blog about a specific product or service which you are selling, you are helping your content to fit into more search queries, thereby increasing organic traffic and potential leads.

Link Bait:

A very important consideration for search engines is the number of backlinks. Backlinks are simply links on another website or platform that links to your website or an article on your website. If you have many backlinks from reputable websites, your website will be viewed as helpful and be ranked higher than a website with no, or with less backlinks.

It is however important to distinguish between backlinks from quality websites and backlinks from unrelated and low-quality websites. Backlinks from unrelated and low-quality websites will actually hurt your SEO rating.

With blogging you can create content. If your content is of help to others, people will share the link to that article. That shared link is a backlink. You can also generate your own backlinks. You will create a backlink every time you share your post on social media. As a bonus, you will realise which type of posts gets shared more than others, which will indicate which topic you should write more on, as that topic will generate more backlinks and in return increase your website’s SEO.

Increasing your indexed pages:

In order to increase your website’s SEO you may want to consider indexing more pages. Every time you write a new article, that post is indexed by search engines as a new single page. A quick caveat, though: more pages does not equate to better rankings. Having more pages, however keep search bots longer on your website. Continuous new articles may also get your website recognised as an active one, which will get your website crawled more often. This in effect means that new content on your website is available on search engines quicker than those websites that do not have a blog, or on which new blog posts appear less frequently.

Quality internal linking:

As you will be aware, a blog article is different from a standard website page, in the sense that a standard website page is static and contains the products and services which you are selling. By linking to your product page in a blog article you are creating an internal link. This helps search engines to better understand your website. If you link a key phrase in your blog article to a specific page on your website, search engines will understand the content of the page to which  the internal link is pointing, better. This in turn will lead to higher rankings for that specific page.

New content to dramatically increase your website SEO:

As mentioned above, search engines “like” new fresh content and will give precedence to a website that updates content continuously. By releasing a continuous stream of valuable content through blogging, you not only please search engines, but you also keep readers/customers coming back to your website.

We are sure you have heard the phrase “Content is King”. In our experience any SEO strategy should start with content. Search engines have a duty to make only relevant and good content available. The best way to be included in the search results of search engines,  is to give them good and relevant content.
