Stop it! Just when I thought I figured out what SEO is we are requested to consider the difference between Organic and Non-Organic Search Engine Optimisation. When will this stop, you may ask. Not soon, I will respond.
Seriously though, just as soon as we get to understand that Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is important to get our websites noticed by search engines (and potential clients) we are confronted with organic and non-organic SEO.
What is the difference then and why is it important for a website owner to distinguish between these two methods?
Let’s consider Organic SEO for a minute. We will not find it in our local supermarkets. There are two reasons for this. First, it is not an organic product such as organic produce like lettuce. Secondly, (in theory) you do not pay for Organic SEO. This being said, organic SEO strategies are normally strategies that can be implemented on your website directly by yourself or during the development of the website and the development of further content thereafter. Sometimes referred to as on-page SEO, organic SEO will normally consist of strategies such as content creation, metatag optimisation, using researched keywords in articles or other website content, engaging with clients on social media etc. Organic Search Engine Optimisation is often referred to as a natural way of obtaining high ranking on search engines without paying any amount to these search engines.
OK, let’s look at Non-Organic SEO for a minute. Given the above it should be clear that Non-Organic SEO will refer to some sort of transaction between a website owner and any one or more of the Search Engines such as Google, Bing or Yahoo. These type of transactions may include paid services such as PPC (Pay Per Click), banner ads, classifieds etc. As can be expected, Non-Organic SEO can be quite expensive.
Which is best?
Now that we know the difference between Organic and Non-Organic SEO we might as well consider which is the best option or at least when will it be considered best to use any one of the two approaches.
Let’s first consider the benefits of Organic and Non-Organic SEO.
- Results are long lasting on Search Engines’ pages and are not dependant on a fixed term advertising campaign.
- Organic results are regarded as much more trustworthy than Non-Organic results.
- It is much cheaper than Non-Organic SEO.
- Internet users are more inclined to click on organic search results than non-organic search results.
- Immediate placement on search engine’s pages.
- More traffic in a short space of time.
- Good for customer targeting.
- Ideal for brand awareness.
We will not consider the negatives in this blog article, as it should be apparent from the above that a benefit for organic SEO automatically results in a negative for non-organic and vice versa.
So which approach is best then?
Let’s be frank and keep it short. No approach is simply better than the other. Each has its own benefits and shortcomings. Whilst a pay per click non-organic approach lands you visitors to your website it may become costly and competitors may click on your website to exhaust your daily number of pay per click ads. Yes, this does happen. I would suggest that every website owner consider his/her company/business’ goals, see which strategy will assist to reach that goal and see how best and most cost effective both approaches can be applied.
The most effective approach, in WebScripto’s view, will be to use all the possible organic strategies from the moment your website is created and employ them on a permanent basis. In addition, it may be prudent to employ (affordable) non-organic strategies at first and taper it down as your organic strategies begin to pay off dividends and ensure that your website is noticed.
